[OS X Emacs] Gnus and AquaMacs 2.1

I upgraded to AquaMacs 2.1 and now Gnus hangs during "Reading .newsrc.eld"
I touched .newsrc and  tried again.  That gave the message
"Reading .newsrc...done" but didn't display the list of newsgroups.  Did 
something change between 2.0 and 2.1?
