No, I don't use another binding.

yes, same here.

*I* move the point. Our original question was how to select all (to apply some function to the selection). So after setting the mark with C-space, I move the point somewhere else (e.g. the beginning of the file) and then jump back with C-u C-space [if you don't move the point there is no point in setting a mark]. One could also use C-x C-x to jump to the original mark :-) 

If you just want to jump to the beginning of the file and back to where you came from, then Elliott's solution is probably best since you don't see a selection.
