Try fancyhdr package,

\pagestyle{fancy} % for doing the headers and footers

\lhead{stuff} % left a of header
\chead{stuff} % middle of header
\rhead{stuff} % right side of header
\lfoot{stuff} % left side of footer
\cfoot{stuff} % center of footer
\rfoot{stuff} % right side of footer

You can put anything text or nothing in the place of "stuff"

\thepage inserts the page number. I use it along with the *geometry*
package to control margins.
