Yes, there is a big one: they will get deleted!

Friedrich, the proper system-wide place is 
/Library/teTeX/share/texmf.local or /usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.local. 
Don't forget texhash!

'Private' MAP need to be integrated with 'sudo -H updmap-sys ...' When 
done, you should delete some files and directories from the 
~/Library/texmf/fonts/map/ tree.

Look into some TXT files in /Library/teTeX/share/texmf.gwtex!
