[OS X TeX] Custom LaTeX Formats

How can I create custom LaTeX formats?

Problem: I am working on a beamer document which makes about 300 slides. I am using about 20 packages. Having an old computer with minimal RAM does not help. I have tried using the usual techniques and work with only a subset of the slides. However, it is still slow. 

I am under the impression that creating a custom LaTeX format with all the packages added in might help make it faster. Is this true? If so how can I go about creating my format files. (Upgrading the computer is not an option).
