It's an emacs packages that allows you to view the compiled equations, 
figures, etc., inline within emacs. Uncertainty growing: It calls latex 
for each equation, using the document header, to create temporary jpg 
(png?) files of each graphic and equation that can be viewed within 
emacs. Really cool when it works. Not, IMHO, a "robust" package. It 
tends to get broken easily with a few changes in settings if you don't 
know what you are doing (read "if a fool like me starts putzing 
around").
