Dear all,

The discussion so far have been immensely helpful.  It has become 
much clearer now how to give GWTeX a try and then hopefully switch to 
it for good.  (As I'm running now Jaguar, perhaps only XeTeX will 
have to wait until Tiger is released.)

Thanks to all and of course special thanks to Gerben for creating the 
whole thing as well as for his hint to use the placeholder package 
system-tetex and, no less, for his understanding people like me who 
didn't upgrade to Panther.
