[OS X TeX] Typesetting "April 9th, 2005" with proper kerning

Hello all,

In my LaTeX document I use this sort of construction here and there:

April 9\textsuperscript{th}, 2005

Unfortunately, when typeset, this looks horrible, because the comma is
sitting way out in the middle of nowhere.

Is there a convenient way to tell LaTeX to make this look better? That
is, put the comma near the 9? I imagine something like

$9^\mathrm{th}_,$

might work, but it seems odd to me that it doesn't typeset it properly
without such shenanigans.

Thanks for your patience again with a new user's questions.

Thanks,

Doug
