Because it's some national style, restricted to some small part(s) of 
earth, a few (million) people.

This one ISO format first lists the number of the year, than that of 
the month in this year, and finally the number of that day in the month 
given before. It can easily be used to sort by date because in this 
format the dates sort as in an ASCII or another encoding of this date's 
value. 2005/09/11 is once meant to describe a day in September some 
weeks ago, another time another day in coming November. And it could be 
meant as a call for help from U.S. American police.
Your example is very bad! A better example would have beee 11/11/11! 
(In Germany it's very meaningful!)
