Others have commented already (BTW, the Lamport books also warns  
against using $$ … $$ for displayed math in his book, it isn't new  
information).

I tend to use \begin{equation} … \end{equation} and \begin{equation*}  
… \end{equation*} for my displayed math needs. Stands out even more,  
and has the added advantage of being asymmetric.
