[OS X TeX] Installing MathTime Pro fonts

Hi all,

There have been some previous threads about this, for instance <http://www.tug.org/pipermail/macostex-archives/2009-March/039928.html
 >, but seemingly without resolution. I have essentially the same
problem, but with a twist. I recently purchased MTPro2 fonts,
installed them in the appropriate place (without the obsolete map
file).   I ran

  sudo mktexlsr
  sudo -H updmap-sys
  sudo -H updmap-sys --nohash --nomkmap --disable mtpro2.map
  sudo -H updmap-sys --enable Map mtpro2.map

and there were no errors. I got the messages (among others)

-rw-r--r--  1 root  wheel  644748 Sep 29 11:04
/usr/local/texlive/2008/texmf-var/fonts/map/pdftex/updmap/
pdftex_dl14.map
-rw-r--r--  1 root  wheel  643198 Sep 29 11:04
/usr/local/texlive/2008/texmf-var/fonts/map/pdftex/updmap/
pdftex_ndl14.map

and

updmap: Map file links or copies:
lrwxr-xr-x  1 root  wheel  16 Sep 29 11:04
/usr/local/texlive/2008/texmf-var/fonts/map/dvipdfm/updmap/dvipdfm.map
-> dvipdfm_dl14.map
lrwxr-xr-x  1 root  wheel  14 Sep 29 11:04
/usr/local/texlive/2008/texmf-var/fonts/map/dvips/updmap/psfonts.map
-> psfonts_t1.map
lrwxr-xr-x  1 root  wheel  15 Sep 29 11:04
/usr/local/texlive/2008/texmf-var/fonts/map/pdftex/updmap/pdftex.map
-> pdftex_dl14.map

So far so good. Now, running a small file under pdfTeX, I get no
output, with the following message:

(./MTPro2 LaTeX test.aux) [1{/Users/rvk/.texlive2008/texmf-var/fonts/
map/pdftex
/updmap/pdftex.map}] [2] [3] (./MTPro2 LaTeX test.aux)
kpathsea: Running mktexpk --mfmode / --bdpi 600 --mag 4+0/600 --dpi
2400 mt2exf
mktexpk: don't know how to create bitmap font for mt2exf.
kpathsea: Appending font creation commands to missfont.log.
)
!pdfTeX error: /usr/texbin/pdflatex (file mt2exf): Font mt2exf at 2400
not found
!pdfTeX error: /usr/texbin/pdftex (file mt2syt): Font mt2syt at 600
not found
  ==> Fatal error occurred, no output PDF file produced!

I don't understand what is wrong. But here's the fun part. If I
compile the same file under XeTeX, it compiles properly. (Similarly,
pdfLaTeX fails but XeLaTeX works as expected. Also, TeX/LaTeX + dvips
fails with the same message)

Any suggestions?  Possible diagnosis?

Thanks in advance
Vijay
