Yes, I tried but it didn't work at first. However, it does work once I redeclare 
  \ProvidesPackage{gentium}
as
  \ProvidesPackage{psgentium}
in (now) psgentium.sty and then use the package psgentium inside my .tex file.


> I doubt that is the real difference. More than likely it was the renaming of the gentium.map file to psgentium.map which removed an interference with the gentium.map file that is part of TL2012 (and NOT included in TL2011 and earlier). 

Ok, now that would be an explanation since my old procedure had always worked up to TL2011.
