Step 1: enable the MAP file fragment containing the mapping between the TeX font name and the file name of the PostScript Type 1 font ('sudo updmap-sys --enable Map=texnansi-urw-garamond.map' for a system-wide installation)

Step 2: use the font by loading it in the preamble: \renewcommand\rmdefault{ugm}


A good means to access the TeX documentation is texdoc. You might like to start with 'texdoc texdoc'…
