Notice finally, just to put a cherry on the cake baked by G. M.-S. and Ross Moore,
that if you duplicate that file ?Fig_6X.jpg and then rename it, you are allowed to
rename the duplicate Fig_6X.jpg, and then

pdflatex GRAPHTEST1.tex

typesets without error.

Even just ls (without options) tells that there is an extra character there:

% ls -B gives
\342\200\216Fig_6X.jpg
so the name of the file is not what it seems…

Brian,

Thanks for the example. Here's the experiment I tried. I uncompressed the zip file, getting a folder.
I duplicated GRAPHTEST.tex and called the new file GRAPHTEST1.tex. Then I edited GRAPHTEST1.tex so it input Fig_6X.jpg rather than Fig_6.jpg.

Then I opened Terminal and changed to the directory of your GRAPHICS folder.

Then in Terminal I typed

        pdflatex GRAPHTEST.tex

and everything typeset without errors.

Next I typed

        pdflatex GRAPHTEST1.tex

and this time typesetting stopped with the error
"Warning: File `Fig_6X.jpg' not found on input line 8."

This seems to be exactly the error you are reporting, except that TeXShop is out of the picture and I got the same result on the command line. So I can relax because as conjectured the problem has nothing to do with TeXShop.
