I updated TeXShop to v. 5.27 on, or shortly after February 12, and I'm wondering if that update I made to TeXShop was the cause of the popup. Otherwise, I don't know why the popup appeared.

Howdy,

Have you tried to copy the file again and opening the new file? The message comes up if, when reading in the file the finds a byte combination that is illegal in UTF-8 Unicode encoding; UTF-8 Unicode is the default encoding for TeXShop out of the box but can be changed in TeXShop->Settings but we recommend NOT changing that. Do NOT edit that file! Please read the Help->File Encoding and TeXShop document in TeXShop for our recommendations and explanation of encoding.

Good Luck,
