Geoff,
The problem lies with aspell, not with Aquamacs.  I'd forgotten that the
latest version of aspell (0.60.6) pukes when run with the tex filter set.

I reproduce your error with Aquamacs 1.4rc2 and aspell 0.60.6, but it works
fine with aspell 0.60.5 or 0.60.4.  I don't have the same issue you report
if I use ispell  -- (setq ispell-program-name "ispell")
