[OS X Emacs] installing bbdb on aquamacs

I have.  It was long ago -- end of 2005.

The tar ball at 

         http://bbdb.sourceforge.net/bbdb-2.35.tar.gz ,

which seems to be the latest, does contain a configure script.

Where are you getting your bbdb from?
