[OS X Emacs] Something's still not right about the font stuff

I have the autoface thing disabled and have gone through and selected
courier new as the font for several types of windows.  I don't always see
that take effect immediately though.  For example, for VM (8.0.12) there are
summary, normal, and sometimes presentation buffers for each mail folder.
I've set all of them to courier new, but I notice that when visiting a
folder (vm-visit-folder) the presentation buffer is often still in a
variable width font until I do something else (click with the mouse in the
window, select something from the menu bar, etc).  Eventually the window
does display in courier, but not immediately.  The summary buffer also has
this behavior.  Takes it a couple seconds to whip into fixed width.  (I
noticed this before I switched to courier.  It was some sans serif
monospaced font before.)
