[OS X Emacs] trouble with \label in Aquamacs

If I use TeX-insert-macro in Aquamacs (1.9), instead of being prompted for 
an argument, I get the message:

"Symbol's function definition is void: nil",

and I get the same behavior from typing C-c (.

Any ideas of what might be going wrong?
