[OS X Emacs] horrible looking fonts with black background?

Pretty much any way that I try it...

       (set-background-color "black")
       (set-foreground-color "white")

or via Options->Appearance->Foreground | Background ending up in customizations.el as in the screen shot below, which illustrates the difference:

btw, a remote emacs via X that looks wonderful...
