That is just standard transient-mark mode.   Make a selection with the mouse or define a region with key commands and type RET.  It will kill it.

In Aquamacs, when a search is started with A-f, the found string will be set as the region.  This is in line with standard Mac interaction patterns.   In the latest revisions of Aquamacs, C-s will not cause this to happen in order to stay consistent with Emacs.
