It's possible to turn off antialiasing in OS 10.1 (by default) or with
TinkerTool or similar utilities, but it messes up the font spacing.
Considering this is now an exposed feature, I have no idea why Apple
hasn't fixed this bug...

Eudora and BBEdit use QuickDraw to do font rendering so they aren't
affected by this bug (you have to use ATSUI, which Cocoa/Java use for
everything, Carbon uses only for static text in controls, with a few
exceptions - e.g. MLTE/Textension).
