As mentioned before: it is optional already and yes you can use your own
gs 7, but note that it produces pdf that is sometimes incompatible with
Apple's PDF implementation (when you have a combination of pk and pfb
fonts).

including sources I use and complete instructions on how to build your
own.
The main problem is that the standard teTeX tree is old, and that the
pdfTeX it contains might be considered antique. This leads to having a
setup with two different web2c implementations.
I would advise at this moment against compiling your own using those
patches. As soon as 10.1 developer arrives here I'll be tuning that
stuff there and probably simplifying it (less diffs, more auto*).
