[OS X TeX] Installing MusiXTeX

You should normally not have to change stuff in 
/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf/. You also do not need to duplicate the 
entire hierarchy (the readme and the we page explain this). As I recall, 
your TeX was unable to find a .sty file when running LATeX. If you 
create the directory  ~/Library/texmf/tex and put the .sty file there 
(or in any subfolder) it should be found.

which both the README and the web site make clear: you need at least to 
have one subdirectory below that level, so ~/Library/texmf/tex for .sty 
files and ~/Library/texmf/fonts. If that is not clear from README and 
web site, I need to change the wording.

If you place the stuff in /usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf it will be 
overwritten when you upgrade the main texmf tree. At least put it in 
/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.local/ (which is also where yo can put 
stuff to have it available for any user on your system). And when you do 
put anything in /usr/local/teTeX/share you need to run

	sudo texhash

before TeX can find it at all.

Wrt to dvipdfm, this is an app that does not follow these mechanisms as 
far as I am aware (not much), so I cannot comment.
