I used to use Alpha all the time in OS9 with OzTeX. It was in fact
the last Classic program I gave up, and only because (at the time)
there were conflicts between Classic and Palm Desktop.

Anyway, I tried BBEdit for a while, but never quite got the hang of
the glossary thing. I'm now using Pepper (due to a recommendation on
this list), and I'm almost very happy with it. (I was happy enough to
buy it!) I love its flexibility defining keystroke shortcuts, and it
even includes HTML Tidy. It works okay with OzTeX. It's speedy and
pretty solid.

Things I miss from Alpha:

1. The ability to tab out of parentheses to the big-dots.
2. More pre-built LaTeX templates... I forget options and names.
3. (When it worked,) the nice reformatting and tabbing of code.

Things I don't miss:

1. Loading time of Classic.
2. Difficulty of changing keybindings.
3. Difficulty of changing fonts and line endings (Mac v. Unix v. DOS).
4. Slightly flaky syntax coloring with respect to quoted text.

The tabbing to big-dots is really the only thing I actively miss.
It's amazing how that small feature can speed up your entry.

Rumor has it that Pepper 4 will be coming out someday. I wonder
whether it will come out before Alpha X (which I would surely try if
it came out...).

Let me know if you find something even better! (I'm not learning
Emacs... sorry.)

if not, i need some help please?

If I use TeXShop to make a pdf file, then transfer that
file, using Scp via Telnet SSH, to my home directory on
hilbert, and open the result with acroread, I get a blank
6 page document (but one with lots of data). It's as though
the required fonts are missing.

Can pdf files be safely transferred from OS X to Solaris?

TIA

I just tried the same thing but with ftp. I could see
the pdf OK with acroread. It seems to be Acroread 4.0 and
SunOS 5.5.1 Generic May 1996.

I, too, am using Alpha in Classic mode. By and large it's quite
seamless. Alpha X is on the way, so I've seen no good reason to walk
away from a tool with such unparalleled richness and depth. I've become
far too dependent on it to have the slightest interest in changing now.

The suggestions made here have worked -- sort-of. The change noted to
/sw/lib/latex2html/l2hconf.pm *does* let latex2html run, but no images
are generated.

Indeed, during fink rebuild latex2html I get

Error: could not determine gs version
Warning: Will not be able to generate images due to above failure.

(I do have fink's ghostscript installed in addition to the copy that
comes with Gerben's tetex, presumably due to system-tetex, since I
didn't do it deliberately:

fink list ghostscript

Information about 320 packages read in 2 seconds.

It looks like things are close, then, but I'm not sure what to do about
the ghostscript thing. Any ideas?

Again, since I'm on the digest version of the list personal CC's would
be appreciated.

You can find out which copy (if there are multiple) of language.dat is
being used by typing

	kpsewhich language.dat

I distribute one with USEnglish, french, german and dutch active.

There is a Fink package tex4ht, and Gerben Wierda's TeX.dmg seems to
contain tex4ht, too, in its recent versions.

Jan -

The following question may be naive, but then I am just a simple TeX user
who wants to get the most out of Alpha.

The "Atchange" script looks useful, but I'd like to be able to save files
without always compiling too. What I'd like to do is to define other macros
or menu items to call pdftex (or other tex commands). E.g., how do you set
the Command-T macro to call tetex (or your favorite TeX program) rather
than the default OzTeX?

Thanks

Eric - and other Alpha fans ..

AlphaX is presently in alpha testing mode, and has all the nice cool
features we all so love. Still a lot of bugs but some good people (I thank
them) are working on fixes.

I'm so happy to see it getting there ... I've become a paid user of Pepper
(also a very nice program), but once AlphaX comes out I'm switching!

From: "Sam Broderick" <sbroderick at mac.com>

This has been discussed already, but I tried epstopdf with the -hires option
for both an EPSF of a graph produced by Igor and a PS via MacOS X print
dialogue. This gives me a full page PDF, but I don't want the page boundary!
In addition the legend is incorrectly colored beige. Directly via MacOS X
print dialogue gives the legend properly but again with a page boundary.

How do I get just the image?

TIA

Gerben & Maarten,

Thanks for the replies to my query.

I used "kpsewhich language.dat" to check which copy is used. It is :

/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.local/tex/generic/config/language.dat

I checked it and it has USEnglish, french, german, ngerman, dutch and
spanish active.

But TeXShop says:

"This is pdfTeX, Version 3.14159-1.00b-pretest-20020204 (Web2C 7.3.7)
(./7_werkgroep.tex{/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.local/pdftex/config/pdftex.cfg}
LaTeX2e <2001/06/01>
Babel <v3.7h> and hyphenation patterns for american, french, german,
ngerman, nohyphenation, loaded."

and complains when I use dutch or spanish.

As for Maarten's suggestion that the language.dat version that
resides in texmf.local can be removed: is that consistent with what
kpsewhich language.dat reveals?

Hi,

I tried the following sequence (from the command-line)

take the full-page ps file and push it though

ps2epsi

This will give you an eps with inline preview (in postscript comments, so
programs don't usually see it)

This epsi file can then be processed by epstopdf, giving a nicely cropped pdf
file.

BTW, I never had any problems with eps created by Igor, try to swich off the
preview option when creating the eps. I don't use the -hires option for
epstopdf, maybe that helps too.

My guess: You need to recreate the formats to get the contents of
language.dat usable.

Type
	fmtutil --all

in a Terminal window.

G

PS. I think you can best:
	remove the language.dat in texmf.local
	run texhash
	run fmtutil --all

as the default language.dat contains dutch.

Guys:
I am sorry to be wasting your disk space with something that has -- I
believe -- been discussed before, but as usual I realized a problem
only when I faced it.

The question is this: I have a slide document that starts

\documentclass[landscape]{slides}

However, when I typeset it with TeXShop (and iTeXMac, for that
matter), the final output is vertical, with the obvious cropping of
long equations, etc.
I tried changing the page setup (within the program) and typesetting
again, but unsurprisingly that changed nothing. I tried looking at
the pdf file with Acrobat, again to find vertical slides.

Can anyone remind me how to fix this?
Thanks!

I have no argument (and actually share most of your frustrations) with your
other Alpha gripes, but I'm a bit perplexed by this one. Line endings are
changed with a popup in the status bar, which is always displayed, and fonts
are changed via a rather primitive, but not very deeply buried, dialog under
the Config menu.

What's difficult?
