The latest experimental epstopdf which is part of the current TeX.dmg
contains an ugly bug. I will upload a new TeX.dmg tonight. If you do not
want to download the entire package, it suffices to download
ftp://ftp.nluug.nl/pub/comp/macosx/epstopdf
and (from the directory where it is located, in a Terminal window)
execute
sudo chmod +x epstopdf
sudo cp -p epstopdf `which epstopdf`
The new TeX.dmg will be available in a few hours.

Thanks---this is very useful information. Just one thing though---on the
maccentral discussion boards last night, mention was made of the recent
upgrade (10.1.3) not supporting any fonts made or modified with
fontographer. Moreover a senior Apple spokesman said that this would
*not* be fixed in a later release. Where does this leave those who want
to use Lucida Bright or Minion in TeX?
I have to say that this recent "upgrade" looks like another case of 5
bugs removed, 10 bugs introduced. Gives a new meaning to backward
compatibility.

Hi Adrian
I am using LucidaBright fonts which I originally bought from YandY for
mac os 9 and then converted to unix form (pfb's ?). CMacTeX
has a lwfn2pfb script.
I just tried these fonts under 10.1.3 and
it all looks OK on preview in TeXShop.
I am not a font expert but if the original person wanted pfb's
and has pfa's couldn't they just use one of Tom Kiffe's tools?
His t1utils has a pfa2pfb option and the script in fact
uses that I think.
I found that there was a bit of messing about to
get the names of the fonts files right but it wasn't
too bad. The abbrevations used by the mac os 9 lwfn fonts
didn't quite match the ones in pfb form.

Well I did not take the time to find this discussion you're mentioning
(could you provide URLs please?), but I rushed to my text editors to
check this.
In my case I can happily say that it is not true: I can use both in
Classic (Nisus) and in OSX (TextEdit, Word) my Fontographer
made/modified fonts.

From: "Eric Hsu" <erichsu at math.sfsu.edu>

Hi folks,
Excellent banter about pros and cons of editors. It's nice to hear
reports from editor advocates. Random notes:
(1) My recollection of changing line endings in Alpha7 was that it
was in theory just a popup, but I recall some peculiar troubles I had
with mixed line-ending files, something to the effect of the popup
change not changing all line endings. The font thing I remember with
more annoyance. I agree that it was doable ( I did do it!), but I
always found it unintuitive and lost among the many config options
that seem to terrify newcomers to Alpha.
(2) This was a clever post from Martin Costabel:
> > Let me know if you find something even better! (I'm not learning
> > Emacs... sorry.)
>
>You ask a question and say immediately that you don't want to hear the
>answer. Can't be helped, I guess.
Can someone comment on some specific advantages Emacs gives you for
editing Perl/TeX/HTML? Even better would be someone who switched
from BBEdit/Alpha/Pepper to XEmacs or Emacs. Mark Guzdial seems to
have gotten Emacs religion... perhaps he can elaborate on what new
features he's enjoying...
I have personally found the initial learning curve of Emacs to be too
high. And this is from someone who taught himself vi, C, 6502 and
68000 assembly language! I have some psychological block because it
takes so long to learn to do elementary operations (and throw in old
bad Telnets that choked on important control characters to make it
worse). But I'd be willing to go there if there was a bright light
at the end of the tunnel.
(3) Someone asked about indenting. Pepper indents text just fine
(e.g. \item lists). I do miss Alpha's tabs re-wrapping text... when
it worked, it was beautiful.
Also, Peter Erwin made a list of cool Alpha features. To add to his
chart, Pepper can be configured to launch OzTeX (and I believe other
TeXs) with Cmd-T. Rectangular selections work fine. In theory it can
mark files, but I haven't quite gotten the hang of it yet.

From: "Joachim Kock" <kock at math.unice.fr>

Hello,
The question of editors seems to be mostly a question of religion or mother
tongue --- it's hard to change! Also comparison is difficulted by the fact
that few people are completely familiar with more than one editor --- and
with the more advanced editors like alpha and emacs you might say that
few people are completely familiar with them at all! It is certainly true
that these two editors are too complicated for many users, especially for
those who spend less than half an hour a day in their editor, since you
have to invest some time in adapting your habits, forcing yourself to use
some fancy features, even if in the beginning it would be quicker to do it
the SimpleText way. I suppose it's a bit like taking the step from qwerty
to dvorak, or like learning to type without looking at the keyboard.
The first step from SimpleText to a text editor is often taken in the need
of a latex menu. It is so convenient to choose a latex environment from a
menu instead of looking it up in the latex companion. It seems that all
the editors mentionned on this mailing list have some sort of latex menu,
although there are probably differences in how smart they are about
inserting the templates. Next step is that you learn the keyboard
equivalents, to avoid mousing around while you are typing. Once you
get used to keyboard equivalents, you are confirmed in your religion...
Here the differences between the various editors begin: their
configurability... Every common action should have a keyboard equivalent,
so you need to bind your own keys, and take control over the combinations.
At this point the latex aspects of your religion becomes less important as
you start to realise the power of editing commands, navigation, scripting,
communication with other programmes, and the editor becomes equally
impoartant for HTML, emails, file conversion...
Not everything can be offered out of the box, so the important thing is
that the editor be configurable. The deeper advantage of alpha and emacs
(and others, perhaps) is that they have an extension language, so you can
go in and finetune the behaviour of the functions and write your own little
scripts. To start with, it is a bit frightening to look into those tcl or
lisp libraries, but it was also frightening the first time you looked into
a latex source file! Very soon you get the feeling, skip through a lot of
incomprehensible code, detect the spot where it says
insertText "\\section\{**\}\r**"
and then you just replace this line by
insertText "%%%%%%%%%%%%%%\r\\section\{**\}\r%%%%%%%%%%%%\r**"
and hopla! every time you invoke that function you will have such %-tags
inserted to make the latex source more readable. (Stupid example of course
--- but this is not the alphatcl mailing list.)

Alpha has certainly learned a lot from emacs over the years, and hopefully
this will continue. It would be very helpful (for the alpha community,
anyway) to hear exactly which features emacs/auctex has that alpha doesn't.
If those features are cool, there is a fair chance that somebody on the
alphatcl mailing list will implement them! (I will do so myself if it is
within my limited tcl capacities...)
Sorry for being long --- I promise my next mail will be short.

Thanks, it works. Thanks a lot indeed for your support.
So for the record: in order to use a custom format under TeXLive
(called hiptex, say) based on pdflatex, create an executable
'hiptex' containing these three lines

The format file 'hiptex.fmt' itself should be in ~/Library/texmf/web2c/

Yes this is what I'm interested in, what am I as BBEdit user missing because
so far I think I can implement most of it using BBEdit and
AppleScript/Perl/shell programming (which is how you customize BBEdit).
But I get the feeling I'm missing some really cool features that other
editors have ...

The long names do not work when you download/copy them to HFS+. I will
change my naming scheme in the future to reflect the name limit size on
HFS+
For the moment, just use the first or last one of that list.

You have to put the files in /usr/local/share/emacs/site-lisp.
In fact I have used the make/make install from the distribution and it
puts it in /usr/local/share/emacs/site-lisp/auctex.
/usr/local/share/emacs/site-lisp should contain subdirs.el for this to work
out of the box. I don't know if porkrinds distribution has it. I did the
compilation myself (and also made an installer package out of it), but if I
remember correctly I had to copy the subdirs.el file myself.
Then you will have to customize tex-site.el.

1. I never got prosper to work with OzTeX under OS 9
2. However, it worked perfectly from day one under OS X with
teTeX/texshop, and I really like the ease + result.

Not that I know of ... but how can the editor know which label is the correct
one? Or do you get a list of all labels or does the editor keeps track of the
labels and does it best to find a match and let you choose when it can't find
a unique match (like command completion in tcsh for example).
Does it keep track of labels in multi-file documents?

Subject: missing ligatures in hard copy
From: "William Duckworth" <wmd at iastate.edu>

I'm experimenting with ps2pdf as a replacement for Distiller. I'm
using the ps2pdf that comes with Gerben's TeX.dmg. On screen, the pdf
looks great (using CMPS fonts). However, when I print it, fi
ligatures are missing and $\mu$ is missing. Using Distiller5 on the
same ps file gives a pdf that looks and prints fine.
The ps file was created using OzTeX for tex-ing and dvips-ing.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'd love to be rid of
Distiller (slow and still not Carbon not to mention expensive).

I recommend to use first the command
dvips -Ppdf file.dvi
and then
ps2pdf13 file.ps
I have written a small shell script that combines both actions and
removes the .ps file
#!/bin/sh
##
# dvipdfc.sh
# Convert dvi files to pdf files
#
#
#
##
for file; do
location=3D$(dirname "$file")
cd "${location}" && dvips -q -o "${file}.ps" -Ppdf "${file}" &&
ps2pdf13 -sPAPERSIZE=3Da4 -r1200 "${file}.ps" && rm "${file}.ps"
done
Save it as a text file dvipdfc.sh. One can invoke it with the command
sh dvipdfc.sh filename %%use filename without the suffix .dvi
To make an executable save the file in ~/bin and issue the command
chmod ogu+x ~/bin/dvipdfc
Then, after restarting the terminal,
dvipdfc filename %% without any suffix
will do the job.

Hi Eric!
I don't know if I've got the religion yet: I still haven't WRITTEN
anything with Xemacs! And it's certainly a pain to install. But
some of the things I like so far:
- Reftex's awareness of labels
- The TOC view of section headings from Reftex (even nicer than Alpha's)
- AucTeX's menus of commonly used phrases (which I missed from Alpha)
More as I get to know the system better -- there are LONG menus of
stuff there that I haven't played with yet...

Just downloaded this and it is great. But it lacks one feature I can
not do without, drag and drop of files to be edited.
It is funny, when I am in a terminal window, I see nothing wrong with
typing a path to emacs (either in the command line or at ^x^f). But
when I am working in teh Aqua/Finder side of things it just seems
utterly anathema.
I would guess it should possible to write a little desktop
applescript that you could drop files onto which would then send the
appropriate commands to emacs to open the files via the
applescript/unix integration, but I have not had time to look at such
stuff.
Anyone want to volunteer to put such together, or have a better idea?

reinstall teTeX again, which I'd rather not do.
Thanks!

What drove me to give up on emacs 21.1 and move to Xemacs is the
still extant bug in Aqua Emacs that shell commands (like executing
latex) don't work because the PATH variable isn't set correctly. I'm
sure it'll get fixed eventually. And when it does, I may go back to
Aqua Emacs because I do prefer its look to Xemacs.

Fink doesn't want to reinstall tetex again, it just wants to be sure
that you have tetex installed and that xdvi can find it. You can choose
the system-tetex package which doesn't install anything apart from some
symbolic links.

That's the easiests problem to solve. See my previous posting on the
.MacOSX/environment.plist
One thing that bothers me but doesn't stop me from using emacs is that is
hangs quite often. E.g. when I open a new .tex file with auctex, it prompts
for a master file, and then it hangs.

It's even easier than that: just put (shell-command "tcsh")
at the beginning of your .emacs file.

You probably have a wrong configuration, since it does not happen with
me.
I have just finished a nice Applescript wrap around emacs 21 on Aqua
which allows for drag-and-drop of files to open them, automatic
loading of all the useful utilities for LaTeX and various stuff. I
plan to have an installer with all the auctex/latex files and the
wrapper file soon. I'm travelling this week so be patient.
