I still haven't, anyway. The problem resolved was getting fink's
self-update not to complain about the presence of latex2html when
updating system-tetex (necessary for using programs like latex2html when
the version of tetex installed is Gerben's own, not fink's version of
same.) latex2html still gives me the same error, and fink's install of
it is configured differently enough from the docs that I'm still a bit
lost as to what to try next. I have asked some of those who might know,
and am waiting for a response. I'll summarize when/if this is ever
straightened out ... or Gerben beats me to it and adds latex2html to
tetex {:-)]

latex2html works for me. I used fink install latex2html. This was after
I had executed fink install system-tetex to make fink recognize Gerben
Weirda's tetex. At that time fink installed some other packages, without
trouble (I don't remember which). Before installing latex2html I had
recently updated using fink selfupdate followed by fink update-all. I
use the cvs repository. What other information might help? When I run
fink -version I get the following information:
Package manager version: 0.9.7
Distribution version: 0.3.2a.cvs

Hi William
How did you set up latex2html? Did it just work when you typed
latex2html file.tex or did you have to configure it somehow ?
On older UNIX installations I have used you had to run a perl
script in the latex2html folder that did a setup. I t hink i t
was called test-install. I can't find it in the fink install.
Thanks - Michael

To make it work, I had to change line 52 in
/sw/lib/latex2html/l2hconf.pm from
@IMAGE_TYPES = qw();
to
@IMAGE_TYPES = qw(png);
BTW, Fink has another latex-to-html translator "tex4ht" that works for me.

No configuration was necessary. I logged out, logged back in, then typed
latex2html file.tex (of course, I had already latexed file.tex in order
to produce the file.aux file that latex2html needs to do its work).

In my case, this line already reads

I think I found it:
The fink latex2html package has not yet (or rather, incompletely) been
updated to the new policy of splitting packages into several parts. It
should have a dependency on netpbm-bin. Until this is done (I am CC'ing
the package maintainer), you need to do "fink install netpbm-bin"
first, and then "fink rebuild latex2html".

I am not sure syntax colouring is the heaviest thing. You should also

In this case, the explanation I gave might not be right. I assumed that
you had, like me, updated to the latest CVS version of the fink package
descriptions. If you still have the netpbm-9.24-1 package, I don't know
what happened. To find out, you could do:
- fink list netpbm (to know where you are exactly)
- fink rebuild latex2html (This does not take long, and in the configure
messages you will probably see why it thinks no image format is
available.)
In may case it said:
checking for pnmcrop... no
Warning: Will not be able to generate images due to above failure.
It did not find the pnmcrop program, because it was not installed.
pnmcrop is (now) installed by the netpbm-bin package, and I think it
used to be installed by the netpbm (<= 9.24-1) package.

Hi Martin
I did get the latest CVS (if a few days back is the latest).
I have netpbm 9.24-1 though. I modified /sw/lib/latex2html/l2hconf.pm by
hand to tell it to use png and gif.
My attempts to latex2html now give me

Subject: Trying to get something Alpha-ish in Mac OS X
From: "Mark Guzdial" <guzdial at cc.gatech.edu>
Date: Mon, 18 Feb 2002 16:52:25 -0500
I'm new to all things Emacs and fink-ish, but I'm trying to learn
Emacs for my LaTeX work since Alpha still isn't carbonized. I miss
the wonderful LaTeX menu in Alpha, so I've been trying to find
something similar. (Yes, TeXshop's LaTeX panel is lovely, but I'm
missing having a more powerful editor than TeXshop, e.g., turning "
into '', handling indentation levels right, etc.)
- My UNIX-using friends say that XEmacs (I've been playing with
carbonized Emacs 21) has that kind of support. I decide to try fink
to get XEmacs. "fink install xemacs" I say. After several prompts
to make dependency choices that I don't completely grok, I go through
a long list of never being able to download
xemacs-base-1.56-pkg.tar.gz from a bunch of different mirrors.
- "Lyx" says another UNIX-using friend. That's the way to get that
kind of support. So I try "fink install lyx". After another bunch
of dependency selections that I don't grok, I get to trying to
download xdvi-22.48.tar.gz from
ftp://ftp.math.berkeley.edu/pub/Software/TeX/ ...which never works.
I go to the forementioned FTP site and find that versions 49, 50, and
51 are out there, but 48 is now long dead and gone. How do I
convince fink of that? I tried doing the sudo dselect mantra
described at http://fink.sourceforge.net, and while that gave me a
bunch of crypto options, it didn't make xdvi any easier to load.
Is there some magic to fink that I'm not understanding?
What editors are others of you using in Mac OS X? Anything you
particularly recommend as being as helpful as Alpha?
Can anyone suggest some nice emacs packages for LaTeX work? I've
found and downloaded auctex and reftex, but don't quite understand
the installation instructions yet.
Thanks!
Mark

According to cvs log, the netpbm package was updated to the new split
scheme on 2002-02-12. This stuff is changing fast right now, and a
couple of inconsistencies are probably unavoidable, but usually this
gets sorted out rather quickly.

For what it's worth, I'm sufficiently addicted to using Alpha for
LaTeX work (and
Python work, and ...) that I'm still using it in MacOS X. It's
running in Classic,
of course, but so far I haven't found that to be a big problem. It
can still communicate
with (Carbonized) OzTeX, so I can type Cmd-T and get the file I'm working on
TeX'd up (though sometimes I have to type it twice, since the first Cmd-T just
switches me to OzTeX).
But if you don't want to run Classic, for whatever reason, then that's not an
option, obviously. Pepper is a possiblity, though I couldn't get
quite as comfortable
with it as I am with Alpha.
I keep thinking there must be a way of telling Alpha to emit some Apple Events
which could (via shell commands, say) run command-line TeX, so I
could use some-
thing other than OzTeX, if I wanted to... but I don't have the time
to learn Tcl in
addition to Applescript and Bourne shell.
cheers,
Peter

Mark,
you are hitting a problem that is unavoidable with systems like Fink
that try to stay lean and fast by downloading the sources directly from
the original site:
Both the Fink developers and the users have to update their package
descriptions very frequently, because the source repositories are
changing all the time.
What you should do in your case is to update your package descriptions
for the xemacs related packages (either by using "fink selfupdate-cvs"
or from the Fink cvsweb site). The xemacs-base-pkg package is at version
1.58-1 right now.
Another possibility is to download the missing 1.56 tarball manually
from wherever you find it and put it into /sw/src. Fink will find it there.
And if you really think you found a problem with Fink itself, then
please write to one of the fink mailing lists and/or the package
maintainer ("fink info xemacs").
XEmacs as installed by Fink works great. I use it all the time to write LaTeX.

Have you tried
% fink selfupdate
yet? I am not sure if this will help, but it might; it seems that your
problem (or at least part of it) is that your version of fink is trying
to download old versions of some packages.
I think that auctex is the standard LaTeX package for emacs.
I use Vim (Vi IMproved). I also maintain binaries for the Carbon
version of Vim on my iDisk,
http://homepage.mac.com/fisherbb/index.html
You can also get my tex plugin there, which allows you to run tex from
the editor, and automatically turns " into `` or ''. Vim has syntax

Not really. I had a nightmare of a time getting LyX to work. I got it
more or less working in the end only to discover that it was not what I
was looking for. I have never used Alpha so I don't know how good a
replacement LyX is. However, there are quite a lot of fiddles to get it
working properly.

As I say, I have never used Alpha but my two preferred solutions for
LaTeX based work on MacOS X are Pepper with TeXShop and Scientific
Assistant. It might be worth looking at these.

HI
I love texshop, but would like an alpha-like editor. How do you force
Pepper and Texshop to work together?
thanks,

emacs-20.7 is available from fink precompiled through dselect: this
means that dselect downloads and installs automatically the MacOSX
binary package. To have all the LaTeX menus and functionalities in
emacs (far superior to those of Alpha and friends), you need to load
from emacs the macros: auctex (and its font-latex and bib-cite modes)
and reftex; auctex should be downloaded from
<http://sunsite.auc.dk/auctex/>. You probably also want ispell (also
available from deselect).

Well, my original disclaimer is very important here: "I have never used
Alpha". No idea if Pepper is what you are after but I like it for
editing TeX files.
I don't force it to do anything to work with TeX Shop. I edit my input
files in Pepper and then open them in TeXShop for previewing and output
to PDF.

previous version is still at
<http://www.u-bourgogne.fr/monge/j.laurens/iTeXMac/iTM-1.0.3.dmg.bin>
Good news:
Bugs fixed in the macro editor, LaTeX panel
Background PDF rendering for Huuuuuuge files, critical
Built in text editor speed improved (no longer hide the toolbar!)
space problems fixed (still critical: maybe not all space problems!!!)
Bad news:
Some PDF viewer features have been broken for a little while due to the
background rendering implementation (top left view became bottom left
view).
There might be a bug when editing projects.
I missed time to make intensive tests.
if you are not too short on disk, keep the old version for a while
renaming the new one only.

You can use the perl-script atChange to do all the latex-stuff when
the file is saved with Alpha. In Terminal.app you can type something
like this:
atchange myfile.tex pdftex myfile.tex
and the file myfile.tex will typeset if you save it.
Look at http://www.lecb.ncifcrf.gov/~toms/atchange.html for atChange.

Hi,
I'm having trouble with dutch hyphenation. I installed Gerben
Wierda's latest TexLive-teTeX distribution (through the link on the
TeXShop home page) and observed that dutch hyphenation no longer
worked. I checked the language.dat file, but dutch was not commented
out (as it was not before I installed the latest version).
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance,

Emacs is the Godzilla of text editors, but it is major learning exercise.
If you have not used it before get a book. The O'Reilly one 'Learning GNU
Emacs' is excellent. It really is worth the effort. The Apple Project
Builder cannot handle GNU autoconf packages, but emacs makes an excellent
IDE for such things.
Secondly there is no point stuffing about with different versions.
The architecture dependent part of emacs is an execution environment for
the Lisp programming language. That is all it does. All the actual
useful functionality editing, mail, web browsing etc. comes from bundles
of Lisp code which are architecture independent. It makes almost no
difference if you execute this code in a command line emacs, a basic emacs
under X windows, Xemacs or one of the Carbonised Quartz emacs. The only
difference is the GUI or lack of it. Since you are running OS X, get the
new Carbonised Emacs 21.1.
If you look inside Emacs 21.1 package Emacs/Contents/MacOS you will see
the emacs engine and a number of directories including 'lisp' and
'site-lisp'. These contain the Lisp code.
If you go to the main GNUemacs web site, you will find links to huge
repositories of Lisp code to add every function conceivable from Tex to
Objective-C class browsers. Once you get the idea, you use Lisp to write
your own extensions.

Subject: TeXLive-teTeX updated
From: "Gerben Wierda" <sherlock at rna.nl>
Date: Wed, 20 Feb 2002 00:27:30 +0100
I have updated the TeX Live (programs) + teTeX (texmf tree) distribution.
The following are all equivalent at this moment:
ftp://ftp.nluug.nl/pub/comp/macosx/tex-gs/TeX.dmg
ftp://ftp.nluug.nl/pub/comp/macosx/tex-gs/TeXLive-teTeX.dmg
ftp://ftp.nluug.nl/pub/comp/macosx/tex-
gs/TeXLive-20020219-teTeX-texmf-beta-20020129.dmg
ftp://ftp.nluug.nl/pub/comp/macosx/tex-
gs/TeXLive-20020219-teTeX-texmf-beta-20020129-2002-02-19-16-34-23.dmg
The size is 55MB.
Changes:
- Synced with TeX Live repository @2002/02/19:09:00:00
New pdfTeX (Web2C 7.3.7) 3.14159-1.00b-pretest-20020211
- Rewritten epstopdf eol-handling at request
release: epstopdf 2.8draft (experimental)
- Removed knowledge abour Ttbbold.map and wolfram.map from altpdftex. To
use
those map files, call altpdftex with
--extradviopts "-u +Ttbbold.map -u wolfram.map"
- More copies instead of symlinks (for direct running from CD or any fs
that does not support symlinks)
- Increased hash_extra from 0 to 30000
There is no direct need to upgrade (unless you want to stay on the
bleeding edge). However, I would like to see some upgrades just for
testing (both of the TeX Live stuff as well as my new epstopdf).
G
Note that it is always best to download form the ftp site. Copies on
other sites may or may not have been updated.
