I have Gerben's tetex (latest, I think) installed. I tried to use fink
to install latex2html and system-tetex, per the advice of David Morrison
last week on this list. Both were "sort of" installed, apparently, but
it's clear that there's some conflict at work here and I haven't a clue
where to begin to sort it all out.

latex2html just doesn't work. On a trivial file it gives

Error: No such image type ''.
This installation supports (first is default):

[yes, that's all, and it quits to the command line.]

Run 'fink update-all' and it wants

The following 4 packages will be installed or updated:
 libpng system-tetex wget zlib
The following additional package will be installed:
 libpng-shlibs

When it tries to run, however, it fails:

Preparing to replace system-tetex 20010808-1 (using
.../system-tetex_20010808-2_darwin-powerpc.deb) ...

It looks like you may have teTex installed .. will check for some files
..

Unpacking replacement system-tetex ...
dpkg: error processing /sw/fink/dists/stable/main/binary-darwin-powerpc/text/system-tetex_20010808-2_darwin-powerpc.deb (--install):
trying to overwrite `/sw/etc/texmf.local', which is also in package
latex2html
Errors were encountered while processing:

/sw/fink/dists/stable/main/binary-darwin-powerpc/text/system-tetex_20010808-2_darwin-powerpc.deb
### dpkg failed, exit code 1
Failed: can't install package system-tetex-20010808-2

Now, after seeing this for the first time I checked /sw/etc and saw a
link there

texmf.local@ -> /usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.local

I toasted it thinking that might allow fink to continue, knowing I could
then re-create it if fink didn't do it for me. Oddly, fink still gves
me the same error even without this link. Same thing if I rename the
link's target, /usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.local. Those were my only
ideas, and now I'm just stumped. Any clue what's going on here, and how
I can get system-tetex updated and latex2html working?

CC's directly to me will be appreciated, as I am on the digest version
of the list.

Thanks,
David Craig

Hi David

I have run system-tetex before and it had no problems I am not
sure what is happening to yours.

I also used fink to install latex2html and got a similiar
outcome. My memory of l2h on UNIX from a few years ago
was that you had to run a file called something like
install-test to do the setup. I think that

>Error: No such image type ''.
> This installation supports (first is default):

is because it should have been told the image type is
gif or png or something and all it has got is an empty
string.

I couldn't find a file install-test
in the latex2html folder which seemed to be in /sw/lib.
But when I looked at the log of the install at one
point it seemed to list the directory of this folder and
install-test was in it ? At this point I decided that
was enough procrastination from my grant application so I
ran fink remove!

Have a look in your latex2html folder and see if you have
such a file. If so I would try running it - its a perl script
I think.

Ross Moore is the expert on this - I am sure he will reply soon :-)
He has the online manual on this web page

No, I hadn't, yes, I should have, and no, they don't. That worked.

Thanks for a good whacking with a nice wet "you fool" noodle! Just what
I needed.

I installed them originally in the right order, I thought, though come
to think of it I think really I may have simply selected them both in
the same run of dselect. I'll be more wary of that in the future.

At any rate, since both were already in place, I'd have hoped fink's
self-update would have been a little smarter about the whole thing,
though I'm aware that's not always going to be a trivial task.

Thanks!

I think this just means the LaTeX format was 'dumped' with Italian
hyphenation turned off.

Go to /Library/teTeX/share/texmf.local/tex/generic/config/, make a copy
of language.dat, create in your home directory a directory
~/Library/texmf/tex/generic/config/ and put the copy there. Then comment
out the line for Italian hyphenation:

%italian
ithyph.tex

Next you must re-'dump' the LaTeX format. I'm not quite sure how to do
this from the command line, but I think running again the
teTeX-installer would do this: I think Gerben's installer reads all
available config files and does all the initializations required.

Hope this helps,

Bruno Voisin

hi
I've been wondering about latex2html and intrigued that you've managed to do
it. However, I'm not sure I understand the ultimate result here. Can you
summarize that previous exachange regarding what needs to be done? I've
already got tetex installed (I use TexShop) and also fink (although I didn't
install TexShop via fink).

thanks!

~/Library (with a capital L). Note that it will only work for you and
not for other users on your Mac OS X machine. If someone else rebuilds
the formats, the patterns are again lost.

It is better to use texconfig (see other post).

I would like to propose that the TeX installer will get an option page
where you can select the languages that you will want to have installed.
The installer can then store a modified language.dat and build the proper
formats on installation time. This would save a lot of hassle, especially
if the selection would be remembered as the default for the next time.

Hi Chip

I think the conclusion is that we are not sure what is going on yet !

I haven't seen anyone report that they have it working.
