right, but that leaves me with black blocks for the french... dunno the word
<g>:

i could then use another package to implement these symbols, but that messes
up margin-kerning somehow...
bruno's tips worked, it's all good now - except for the oldstyle numbers.
i'll try his other suggestions next.
