"J.Huelsmann" meinte doch tatsächlich:

> snip
>> ok, i want to install t1-fonts to use
>> \usepackage[T1]{fontenc}
> snap
> I installed Tex using Gerben Wierda´s i-Installer and that was it.
> Now i can use
> \documentclass[a4paper,ngerman]{scrartcl}
> \usepackage[applemac]{inputenc}
> \usepackage{babel}
> \usepackage[T1]{fontenc}
> \usepackage{ae}
> \usepackage{aecompl}
> umlauts (äüö) in the hyphenation-lists.

bruno's tips worked, it's all good now - except for the oldstyle numbers.
i'll try his other suggestions next.
