Uh, the vfinst package _is_ a set of scripts (in PERL, I believe) which 
are a wrapper around FONTINST.

That's at once its strength, and a drawback---it can automagically install 
any of the fonts in its list, but only those fonts, 'cause it relies on 
having specific information about them up front.

I'll see what I can do on this front next week.
