Thanks for the info. Apparently you need to provide the full path to the
application, as in
sudo open /Applications/Utilities/i-Installer.app
I had finally resorted to Pseudo.app, but had a hard time finding where
it lives (http://personalpages.tds.net/~brian_hill).
