[OS X TeX] Need help with PinYin

Does anyone know how to produce a(n) umlaut \"{u} with a check \v{} above 
it in LaTeX. These are some of the things I've tried:

\texttt{\"{\v{u}}}
\texttt{\v\"{u}}
$\ddot\check{u}$
$\check\ddot{u}$
\texttt{$\check\ddot{u}$}

The last 2 work (sort of), but they look out of place with the surrounding 
(non-math mode) text. Anyone from the Chinese Tex User Group on the list?
