Well, here we are: the problem is that the table of contents creates a 
running head with the word "CONTENTS" slanted. Even without a table of 
contents, consecutive pages would have the same effect.

A quick-and-dirty fix: try to put in the preamble of your LaTeX document:

\renewcommand{\slshape}{\itshape}

Seems to work with your sample file!
