I have tried to reproduce this, but without success so far. i-Installer
itself is pretty ignorant of spaces in directory names. It might be
that not all packages are and that scripts need mending. I have not
checked all functions of all packages.

Again, no. i-Installer retrieves the new table of contents, then checks
for all files that are already available if the MD5 checksum has
changed. If the checksum has changed, the file has changed and it is
removed from the local package for lazy update when needed. This is
reported in the messages view.
If you have problems, please report them directly to me and include
output from i-Installer (views and Console), maybe even set the log
level to 4 or 5 or so.
