You might want to look at Stone Design's Create.

Yes, though there've been some up-dates since then. Also look up _TeX
for the Impatient_ (long out of print, but well worth getting on
inter-library loan), _TeX by Topic_ (available from the author as a
.pdf) and _TeX Unbound_..
