Was there a suggestion a while ago to change this to ~/Library/tex/texmf 
so that there would be a logical placement for TeX related ``stuff'' 
that wasn't appropriate in the tex tree? (My memory fails me---I can't 
remember what sort of ``stuff'' was being proposed to be put in this 
location...)

If so, a big reorganising like you're saying would be the ideal time to 
do this.
