thanks for your message. Strangely it doesn't change anything, i.e. 
if i use Enrico Franconi's Enhanced Carbon Emacs out of the box 
everything's fine. If i want to change the font all germans umlauts, 
etc. are displayed as small rectangles only and it doesn't matter 
which other font i choose. For the moment i will just not change 
anything and will first try to get used to Emacs in general. Maybe i 
will understand what's wrong someday.
