Sorry, I made a typo in my original instructions.
Type in terminal:
rm ~/.bash_profile
(remove the path stuff we did earlier)
then
echo 'export PATH=${PATH}:/usr/local/teTeX/bin/powerpc-apple-darwin7.3' 
 >> ~/.bash_profile
(note the capital X! oops!)

Close terminal window, open a new one, try again:

which tex
