[OS X TeX] Recompiling BibTeX

I have quite long annotations in my .bib file, too long for BibTeX. 
When running BibTeX it fails because some fields are larger than 5000 
characters. I was told that changing this limit and recompiling it 
should be fairly easy, but I have no idea how to do it. Has anyone 
already compiled such a version or can maybe give me an idiot step by 
step guide so I can do it myself?
