It may not be the best solution, but i guess it would work: why not 
simply open .tex-file and then use the search-replace-option (apple+f) 
with search for '\vref' and replace with '\ref'? and tell him to 
replace them all - will work within some seconds and should not lead to 
problem when you replace the complete command - i would say…

as far as your other problem goes, i handle things the same way as mr
