[OS X TeX] Help, References

Dear all,
I am really new in LaTex. until this time i always write my mini papers 
with Pagemaker because of time limitation to change many command in 
Latex depend on  each paper styles.
Now i have little bit time and then i try to use LaTex for my next 
paper.

I have bought TLC second edition. I use TexShop.
if I type
\begin{thebibliography} in texshop
the output become
References

I tried to change the default bibname from References to REFERENCES 
with command as below

\renewcommand{\bibname}{REFERENCES}

this command can not be excutable with massage
!LaTex Error:\bibname undefined

how to solved this problem?

another is hoe can i made only the Abstract as a run-in heading the 
other section heading is display type
