[OS X TeX] unknown graphic extension

This is mostly out of curiosity:

When I want to include a graphic file whose name ends as in

    14.01.01.pdf

I get the message

    unknown graphic extension: 01.01.pdf

When the name ends as in

    14_01_01.pdf

all is well.

Is it the case that TeXshop will not accept "." in file names? Why?
