There is a project called "Aleph"
<http://www.tex.ac.uk/cgi-bin/texfaq2html?label=aleph> which aims at
getting something usable out of the current Omega mess, hoping for a
better future. I can't say more, as I'm not using it.

There is an alternative Unicode approach to TeX called XeTeX. It adds a
lot of flexibility, and is well integrated with TeXShop and iTeXMac;
however, you lose cross-platform compatibility, as XeTeX relies
entirely on OS X font management. XeTeX has a web page
<http://scripts.sil.org/cms/scripts/page.php?
site_id=nrsi&item_id=xetex> and a dedicated mailing list
<http://tug.org/mailman/listinfo/xetex>.
