Sorry, I thought what was meant by "flatten" was displaying the bundle 
as a directory. (Similar to what is done, for example, by removing the 
extension of a Mail.app .mbox bundle, to reveal its mbox and Info.plist 
content.)

Obviously, I had read too quickly. Sorry.
