[OS X TeX] .aux files (A propos TeX wrappers)

For a while now, I have had to trash the .aux file just about every 
single time the console refused to typeset. The slightest missing $ will 
do it. With Robertson's macro (I am sticking to 1.35a with the old 
pdfsync until it's safe for me to upgrade) it is no great deal but a bit 
annoying. Still, I would like to know what is going on. Would anyone 
have an idea? Surely, it can't be normal.
