[OS X TeX] .aux files (A propos TeX wrappers)

(1) I didn't forget as I no idea what it means. I tried a few x here and 
there but it didn't do anything.
(2) However, you "compelled" me to look into this .aux business. Here is 
what happened.

In myfile.tex, I typed

    $\times

and then tried to typeset. The console complained about a missing $. So 
far so good.
Back to myfile.tex, I typed in the missing $ and then tried to typeset. 
The console now complained about 

    ...
    ... myfile.aux
    Runaway argument
    ...
    ...
    l.76 \begin{document}
    ?

Up to now, this is where I would trash myfile.aux but, this time, I 
tried to copy the above from the console. I selected it from the bottom 
up but, as I released the mouse, the console started to scroll down and 
the pdf appeared with the appropriate x !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
When I did it again, just after I released the mouse, while the console 
was scrolling, I hit Copy and then, later, pasted it somewhere: it was 
the preamble of myfile.tex

To see, I created newfile.tex with the same preamble as myfile.tex. I 
typed the word "text" and typeset to make sure. Then I typed

    $\times

and then tried to typeset. The console complained about a missing $. So 
far so good.
Back to newfile.tex, I typed in the missing $ and then tried to typeset.
IT WORKED!!!

So it must be something in myfile.tex but now the question becomes: how 
do I go about finding what it is without spending the rest of my life? 
(myfile.tex is 268 Kb and heavily formatted and tabulated etc, etc.)
