Ingo Reich :

For the Question on classes, I will put my 2 cents in for memoir. I have
used it to write 2 books and a slew of other papers on historical arms
control agreements (not much math other than the odd fraction). I have
modified the memoir class so that it defines my own page layout style
without doing any other damage to the class document, meaning everything
still works, but "Bob" is added as a nice style of headers, footers and
chapter headings. Memoir.cls is nice because so much has been incorporated
into it.

I use about a half dozen or so other packages; dropcaps, captions,
longtable, rotating, et al. that perform very specific functions.

My suggestion as someone a year into LaTeX, is to expect to use up at least
one toner cartridge on your laser printer just learning the basics. Print
out the entire memoir manual, don't expect to read it as a pdf. invest in a
three hole punch and a pile of binders. Print out manuals for other
interesting packages. and buy a copy of the Latex Companion (2nd ed.).
