I would be interested in getting results from the fllowing test:

1. Put the following (what is between the ====== lines) in the file 
tex-perf

=====================================
#!/bin/sh

for i in 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8  9 10
do
        fmtutil --byfmt pdflatex >/dev/null
done
=====================================

2. Make the file executable:

chmod +x tex-perf

3. Run the following command:

sudo time ./tex-perf

Enter your password and let it run. After a while, it reports a result. 
Send that result back to me with a description of the system you have 
used.

E.g. in the format

500MHz G4 Cube 10.3.9 Server        48.05 real        29.43 user        
 7.98 sys
1.2GHz G4 iBook 10.4.2            56.60 real        44.75 user        
 8.48 sys
