Run

   sudo fmtutil --byfmt latex

On my computer that results in the output

fmtutil: running `pdfetex -ini -jobname=latex -progname=latex
-translate-file=cp227.tcx *latex.ini' ...
This is pdfeTeX, Version 3.141592-1.21a-2.2 (Web2C 7.5.4) (INITEX)

\@currdir set to: ./.

Assuming \openin and \input
have the same search path.

What happens in your end?
