The doc is in
/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.gwtex/doc/fonts/gtamacfonts
If you get this reaction from texdoc, do you maybe have a different
installation also on your system (e.g. fink)? Have a look at your PATH or
check with
which texdoc
to see which texdoc command is actually being used from the command line

Character protrusion is possible because that stretches/shrinks glue
between words and that is independent from the font itself. Font expansion
is not possible because that changes the font itself and that is not
supported with TTF fonts. I have no idea if it is possible in principle.
It would be nice if dvips had TTF support. I wonder is dvipdfmx has TTF
support. If it has, I could switch from dvips+distiller to dvipdfmx for
simpdftex.
I do not know the specifics of microtype but if you can call it with a
restriction to character protrusion, it should just work.
